What is an Altar?

An altar is any structure upon which offerings such as sacrifices (food, incense, etc) are made for religious purposes.  Altars are usually found at shrines and they can be located in temples, churches and other places of worship.

   ( 壇)         - Tan/Taahn               = Altar/Platform

(祭 壇)         - Ji Tan/      Taahn      = Sacrificial Altar

(神 檯)       - Shen Tai/Sun Toi     = Spirit Table

 

Generally altars can be classified as Diety/Gods or Ancestors based.

The major Asian religions are:  Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism and Shamanism
